Members visit Plains All American Pipelines L.P in Cushing, OK

OSU Automation Society organized a field trip to Plains All American Pipelines L.P. (PAAP L.P.) in Cushing, OK. PAAP L.P. is a publicly traded master limited partnership, Fortune 500 company engaged in the transportation, storage, terminalling and marketing of crude oil, refined products and liquefied petroleum gas and other natural gas related petroleum products. 9 members accompanied by the faculty advisor Dr. R. Russell Rhinehart visited the crude oil pipeline storage and terminalling facility in Cushing, OK on 18th Jan. 2013 morning. Mr. Timothy Wharry, Terminal Manager showed the group around the facility explaining its features and strategic importance. The group spent time at the control room of the facility, where the Mr. Lonnie the operator, Mr. Charles Lane the operations supervisor and Mr.Timothy explained how the Distributed Control System aids in controlling the entire unit spread over almost a square mile from a central location. Questions regarding level and density transmitters, pumps, variable frequency drives, control valves, safety, operation and maintenance of the unit were addressed by the PAAP L.P. personnell. The visit ended with the group being shown around the facility, which is amongst the largest terminalling and storage facilities for crude oil.
